The 2026 U.S. National Debt: A Complete Picture

The total. America’s gross national debt stands at roughly $40.1 trillion as of September 2026, and it breaks down along two lines: who holds it, and what form it takes.

Who holds it (Aug 5, 2026). The debt divides into two buckets. The larger share $32.10 trillion, or 80.6%  is debt held by the public: investors, institutions, and foreign and domestic buyers of Treasury securities. The remaining $7.73 trillion (19.4%) is intragovernmental debt, money the government owes itself, primarily through the Social Security and Medicare trust funds.

What it’s made of (July 2026). Looking at marketable Treasury securities, the borrowing leans on medium-term instruments. Notes (2–10 yr) dominate at $16.17tn (50.45%), followed by Bills (4–52 wk) at $6.99tn (21.81%), Bonds (20–30 yr) at $5.48tn (17.09%), and Other securities like TIPS and FRNs at $3.41tn (10.65%) totaling about $32.05tn.

Maturity and demand. The debt turns over fairly quickly: about 33% of publicly held marketable debt matures within 12 months, though the average maturity is around 71 months. Investor appetite remains strong July 2026 bid-to-cover ratios were 2.68 for 4-week bills and 2.30 for both 10-year notes and 30-year bonds, all comfortably above the 2.0 threshold that signals healthy demand.

The human scale. Translated to individuals, the debt equals about $116,480 per person and $295,494 per household. The frequently cited $285,408 per taxpayer figure (US Debt Clock) is deliberately conservative, dividing by the ~104 million filers who actually owe income tax rather than all filers.
